The Crucifixion

This collage came together over September and October of 2021. These simple basic geometric forms create a bird's eye view of the Crucifixion of Christ. It is an appropriate post for Good Friday.

Kandinsky Circles #1

After studying Rothko I pick up on Kandinsky. I did 4 sets of these and they were great fun. I picked out six different gel plate prints and cut out six squares and then 3 circles to collages on each square.

 

Silk Scroll

 

I printed directly in the book, collaged a square print over it, then collaged one of my oriental brush pine trees on top. It reminded me of a silk scroll.

Fragments

Most years I pick out a couple of artists to study. At the time I did this work I was interested in Rotko's color blockwork. For the past four years, I have been doing printmaking again but placing them in books instead of framing them. Some are prints others are prints combined with collage. Each book spans about one year. But I occasionally go back through a book and add to the images. All are entitled Art Mythos followed by a number. This one is from Art Mythos III. 

 

Art Nouveau Madonna

I did the sketch for this little gouache painting in my Moleskine 5x8 sketchbook weeks ago. Today I finally took the time to finish painting an collage. It is another in my art nouveau series which is based on Gustav Klimt's Hope II. My purpose in studying and the artists from this period is to take ideas and techniques of these artists and add what I really like to my own work. The background is gold acrylic; the clothing is pieces of my gel plate prints cut up and collage onto the figure; the face and hair are painted in gouache. The hand was much better until I started fiddling with it to make it better but who hasn't destroyed something trying to fix it? Still, I relearned something I have known for years––always mix up more paint than you think you would ever use. Not sure if I am ready to move on to a new project yet are just move this series to the back burner for a bit.

SBS Polishing Klass 6

The last class was with Juliana Coles. Her topic was art journaling. She did a great demo plus a parting gift of a detailed step by step exercise. I did this homework based on her demo before opening the exercise. Remember it is a start not a completed work. Now I need to find just the right book to alter for the art journaling exercise.

We started with an incomplete drawing or failed sketch.

Then we added words, thoughts. This reminded me of the Morning Pages exercises.

Next we added paint covering some but not all of the words we had written.

Then some mark making and collage. Not sure where this will go next.
